About this product
Hello fellow Shrimpian, thank you for purchasing this shrimp self-sustaining enclosed ecosystem. This is more advance version of the semi enclosed version you may already owned. Please follow the care instruction for the longevity of this system.
Inside, you will find cute micro lobsters, seashells, lava rocks, coral plant, algae and microorganisms. This ecosystem has the necessary beneficial bacteria/plant to break down waste and convert it into food for algae. In turn, the algae produce oxygen and provide food for your shrimps. The shrimp size is about ¼ - ½ cm in the ecosystem and can growth to 1 cm within a year. They can change color white-pink-red depending on their stress level, temperature, maturity, and lighting. This sealed systems average life is 1-3 years. Some may last longer, the oldest model lasted for 11 years.
Caring for your Pet Shrimps
· Located the magnet on the Styrofoam, use this to find the corrosion resistance magnet inside the sealed system to clean your glass. You can also finesse it to rearrange the coral decoration to your desire location.
· IMPORTANT (maturation period): your system maturity is around 2-4 weeks. With any FULLY closed off systems, it will need more time to mature. A fully enclosed SHRIMP ecosystem this small requires just the right amount of light (system often fail prematurely due lighting). Lack of light: Algae won’t be able to photosynthesize resulting in oxygen deprivation. Too much light: resulting in higher PH level, not suitable for shrimp. Lighting and getting an established colony of beneficial bacteria is the key for your system longevity. If you don’t want to risk your shrimp dying prematurely, please follow these instructions:
· Find a bright indirect sunlight for roughly 8 hours daily. After 2 to 3 months, you should see green/brown algae forming on the seashells and glass. This is a sign that your system is established and healthy. Your shrimp will grace on these algae and bacteria. Living room and offices are great place for this system.
· Location: keep indoor at room temperature between 62-80 degrees F. You may leave in direct sunlight but there is a chance it might get too hot. Caution: leaving it near window (temperature fluctuation), on top of fireplace, or heater vent (too hot).
· Use corrosion resistance magnet cleaner to clean algae or move stuff around if needed. Magnet can be pick up again if drop to the bottom.
· Reduce lighting to 5-8 hours if you notice an algae bloom.
Breeding: It’s rare but can happen. Your shrimp might reproduce after 1-2 years. The eggs are red and visible under the shrimp belly. One can typically berry 3-10 eggs for 2 months before releasing them. The sealed in the bottom may be broken to let them out. Once this is broken, it cannot be resealed.
